MORE THAN JUST IMPROVED EYESIGHT AND HUMAN TOUCH
SANKAR FOUNDATION’s CATARACT DEPARTMNET OFFERS OTHER DISTINCT BENEFITS:

  1. Cataract surgery improves your quality of life. Because cataracts develop slowly, it may take a while to notice that it is getting more difficult to DO JOB, EVEN READ OR DRIVE AT NIGHT. You may just gradually stop doing the activities you enjoy without knowing why. Having cataracts may even CONTRIBUTE TO POWERTY DEPRESSION OR ANXIETY. WHEN YOU HAVE YOUR CATARACTS REMOVED, YOU CAN EXPECT TO DO MANY OF YOUR FAVORITE ACTIVITIES AGAIN. Quality of life increased by 50 percent after cataract surgery.
  2. Cataract surgery can decrease the risk of ACCIEDENTS, falls and fractures. Loss of vision is one of the most common reasons for falling. Patients who had cataract surgery had a 25 percent DECREASE IN THE RISK OF HIP FRACTURE, ACCIDENTS and SNAKE BITE etc during the next year.
  3. Cataract surgery may help you live longer. Those who had cataract surgery had a 40 percent reduction in mortality risk compared to those who did not have cataract surgery.

Three main types of cataract surgical procedures are in practice at Sankar Foundation:

    1. The most common type of cataract procedure performed today is called Phacoemulsification (Or "Phaco") Cataract Surgery with Foldable Intraocular Lens (IOL) Implantation. A small incision is made on the side of the cornea, the clear, dome-shaped surface that covers the front of the eye.
    2. Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (MSICS).
    3. Conventional Extra Capsular Cataract Surgery (ECCE).

MSICS and ECCE are both safe and effective techniques for treatment of cataract patients in community eye care settings.
