K Apparao, working as a daily labourer in a Jute Mill in Vizianagaram, was married to Padma who is a close blood relative of Mr. Apparao. They had a son and a daughter - Kumar and Adi. Kumar was sent to his grand father’s house in his childhood in Antuthota Agraharam in Vizianagaram Distrist as Appa Rao could not afford the expenditure for his education.

Even though Kumar had vision problems since his childhood, it was noticed only 2 years back when he was 10 years old. Kumar did not tell his grand parents or teachers or his friends about the vision problem as he was afraid of doctors.

He was identified to have serious problem of left eye one year ago when he went to Vizianagaram to his parents’ house and then was advised to go to Sankar Foundation in Visakhapatnam by the local doctor.

Mr. Kumar was brought to Sankar Foundation on 10 Dec 2009 and after examination, found to have congenital Glaucoma with very less vision in both eyes. He was under medication (costly drugs supplied free of cost) to bring down intra ocular pressure and later posted for Trabulectomy with MMC + Lensectomy multiple surgeries in Left Eye. Surgery was performed under general Anesthesia on 30 Mar 2010.

The parents and the grandfather of Kumar were extremely happy that Kumar was taken care of very well by the Foundation, right from the day he visited the hospital till his surgery recently. Had he told the family about his vision problem earlier, his vision would have been saved. But now, the disease could only be arrested.

This case study is an important indicator of the need for proactive screening in the children for eye diseases, as they normally do not come out with problems on their own. Sankar Foundation has one of its aims to screen 25000 school children every year for eye diseases and requests kind hearted individuals to contribute financially to its school screening programmes.
