Department  of Orbits and Ophthalmic plastic surgery at Sankar Foundation Eye Hospital:

This departmant was established  in May 2010 by Dr. M. Subrahmanyam, one of the senior most surgeons in India. He is the present President of Oculoplastic Association of India. Dr.M. Subrahmanyam has more than 25 years  of experience in orbital and ophthalmic plastic services, has established this department at Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital and Regional Institute of  ophthalmology, Hyderabad and performed several thousand surgeries and started long terrm fellowship traing program. He is the first Indian to write a book on orbital Diseases.

The department of orbit and ophthalmic plastics has a dedicated outpatient department of about 1056Sq.feet, located in the first floor . The OP runs for 6 days a week from 9am to 5.30 pm. There is a dedicated operation room with  requisite facilities for surgeries under both general and local anaesthesia. Presently Dr.M.Subrahmanyam left the organization on personal reasons. The foundation is looking for a suitable surgeon in this field.

 

Scope of Orbital Services:

Orbit is the bony cavity in which the eye ball is located. It contains different types of tisses like muscles, nerves , blood vessels, fat, lacrimal glands etc.The spectrum of diseases that affect the orbit is very large,and involves infections, inflammations, parasitic infestations,tumors-both benign and cancerous from all the tisses, secondary and metastatic,congenital, and in thyroid obital diseases apart from trauma, fractures and foreign bodies.

Ophthalmic plastic surgeries involve plastic surgeries on eyelids which are for functional and also for cosmetic problems. The common conditions include ptosis or droopy eyelid ( nearly 40% of children with this congenital problem will have defective vision), lid margin problems which can damage the cornea and lead to corneal blindness, lid reconstructions for tumors ( both benign and malignant/ cancerous ), after trauma, burns, birth defects , lid closure in facial paralysis, orbital reconstruction patients with unsightily eyes or after removal of an eye.

Ocular oncology deals with tumors within the eye and laso those involving the lids and orbit and can occur at any age group, from infants to very old. Several complex procedures are performed to save the eye and life.

Lacrimal services deal with watering eye from obstruction to drianage ,which can again need a procedure from an infant to an elderly patient.

Aethetics is purely cosmetic and involves surgical , laser and /or Botox.
